Bob Ravenscroft Trio’s new album hits new improvisational heights, literally. CrossCurrents (Ravenswave Recordings) is an emotional foray through seven originals that invoke feelings like the opening “Unsettled” — an 8-minute track marked by edgy piano exploration and passionate bass riffs — and other succinctly titled titles such as “Foreboding,” “Beguilement” and “Tensility.” These descriptors are apt explanations of what the music creates for listeners…they captivate, distract, calm and a whole lot more. It’s a challenging whirlwind of emotions and yet another extension of Ravenscroft’s recent exploration of the musical unknown.
